GREAT INTERNET GRAPHICS....
We recommend setting your video card drivers in windows3 or windows95 to at least 256 colors , preferably 65,000 colors (16bit) or even 16 million colors (24bit).
To check and your current settings, go into the control panel under main for windows3 or my computer under windows95.
Look for display icons and check the settings. If your not running at least 16bit color, than your not getting the full potential out of your system, and the internet pictures probably look a little distorted.
Be careful, before you make any changes, you might need the vga drivers and your windows disks or cd.
For the latest video drivers, visit the links page at our other web site for a list of vga card manufacturers, http://www.micro1.net, you can get drivers from the various websites; Diamond, ATI, Matrox, Trident, etc.
IMPORTANT...Do not try to go beyond the capabilities of your video card. Generally, a 1mb card can produce 16bit color at 640x480 resolution, for 800x600 you'll need 2mb to get 16bit color, for 24bit color you should have a 4mb video card and a fast Pentium system.
It's worth the effort, 16bit color is photographic quality, 24bit is unreal.
FAST MODEM SPEED ON THE INTERNET....
The fastest modem connection is a 56k modem connected to an ISP that can provide that speed, We setup our computer customers this way and they connect at over 50k most of the time... It's awesome speed...
Otherwise, a 33,6 or 28,800 modem works nicely. Anything slower, such as 14,400 or 9600 is considerably slower.
OPTIMUM COMPUTER SPEED.....
Any 486, 586, or 686 will do fine..
Make sure you have lots of RAM (memory chips), at least 16mb if not 24 to 64mb. Memory is inexpensive now. About $75 for a 16mb chip. Buy as much as you can.
Optimize your hard disk every month. Use any defrag program such as defrag in dos for windows3 or defrag in windows95 for win95, Norton utilities is good to.
Make a permanent swap file on your hard disk, in the control panel under enhanced386 for windows3, and under system/virtual memory for windows95. Under windows3 you should double your ram size, for windows95, make a swap file 100mb minimum and 200mb maximum if you have a current system with lots of hard disk space.
If you go through these three issues on your system successfully, you'll have a smoother and more efficient running computer system.
